In parallel, Bulgarian President Iliana Yotova has formally appointed a new caretaker cabinet, led by central bank deputy governor Andrey Gyurov. This comes after the resignation of Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov’s minority government last December and three consecutive and failed attempts to form a regular cabinet.
The caretaker government’s main task will be to ensure a fair and transparent election process, demonstrated by the appointment of election integrity activist Stoil Tsitselkov as Deputy Prime Minister, tasked specifically with overseeing the upcoming vote, an unprecedented move in recent caretaker administrations. Additional priorities include ensuring effective oversight mechanisms to prevent unjustified price increases and speculative practices in the context of the euro’s introduction. If effectively implemented, enhanced consumer protection measures and careful fiscal oversight could help the interim cabinet safeguard a stable economic environment, support budgetary discipline and create conditions conducive to sustainable economic growth during the politically transitional period.
Early polls suggest the snap elections may produce another highly fragmented parliament, with a strong debut expected from a forthcoming coalition centered on former President Rumen Radev, who resigned on 19th January to enter party politics. Based on current polling, possible scenarios for the post-election period include a single-bloc government led by Radev, a coalition government headed by the former President’s formation and a hung parliament without a functioning majority.
