Yerlan Karimov

Yerlan has 11+ years of experience in policy analysis, antitrust regulation and sustainable development. At Aretera, he specializes in cross-sectoral policy analysis, studying economic trends and preparing analytical materials for clients in energy, tech and transportation sectors.

Prior to joining Aretera, Yerlan worked as the Director of the Center for Regional Studies in Economic Research Institute within Kazakhstan’s Ministry of National Economy. In this capacity, he led research in the field of regional development, and prepared analysis for the President of Kazakhstan. Previously, Yerlan worked as the Deputy Director of the Secretariat for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) under the Government of Kazakhstan, where he was responsible for the development of the country’s Climate Budget and authoring the methodology of the country’s Child Well-being Index. Yerlan also worked at the Center for Entrepreneurship Development of the Economic Research Institute, responsible for reforms to improve the position of Kazakhstan in the World Bank’s Doing Business ranking, as well as conducting Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA).

Yerlan is a member of the Academic Council of Enactus Kazakhstan, an international organization that helps young people start sustainable businesses and solve social and environmental problems in the community. He is also a Senior lecturer at Maqsut Narikbayev University (Astana) where he teaches Economic Theory. His comments and interviews have regularly appeared in local business media, while he has written several scientific papers on entrepreneurship development and sustainable development in Kazakhstan.
