The Road to Baku: Azerbaijan's Preparations for COP29
May 27, 2024
Baku, Azerbaijan

The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP) is the most significant event on the sustainability calendar, serving as a driving force for global climate action. Each year the event dominates the global media agenda and is a prime opportunity for governments and companies alike to align and articulate their sustainability commitments to global audiences.

COP29 will be held between 11-24 November 2024 in Baku for the first time in the Caucasus (the last time it was held in the CEE region was COP24 in 2018, in Katowice, Poland). Despite being a leading oil and gas producer, Azerbaijan aims to use COP29 as a catalyst to promote its sustainability ambitions and position itself as a regional leader in environmental initiatives.

Organizational Structure and Insights

Azerbaijan will formally assume the COP Presidency in June. The COP29 Organizing Committee has been established, headed by Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mukhtar Babayev. The committee is headquartered in the newly-built White City district of Baku, which serves as the operational centre for the conference's preparations. Strategic oversight for COP29 is provided by the President’s Office, with operational support from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In recent weeks, COP29 has launched an official website, along with the event's slogan (COP of Peace) and logo, indicating a formal start to the organizational efforts. Prior to assuming the presidency, organisers are developing the agenda, positioning its interests before key local and international stakeholders and aligning goals in with counterparts from the UAE (COP28) and Brazil (COP30)

Registration for speaking opportunities on various panels will begin in July. Attendees will have the chance to participate in discussions across the Blue and Green Zones, which focus on different aspects of climate change, from climate financing and emission goals to sub-sectors such as health, transport and manufacturing. These opportunities are designed to foster collaboration and the exchange of ideas among global leaders, experts, and activists.
